Dr. Ishan Y. Pandya is an accomplished Indian researcher and educator known for his significant contributions to forest ecology and biotechnology. His research has focused extensively on carbon dynamics within forest ecosystems, particularly in assessing their carbon sequestration capabilities across various natural environments. Dr. Pandya is actively involved in academic teaching, research activities, and the publication of scholarly works. Notably, his pioneering research in the Sub-tropical moist deciduous forests of the Dangs District, Gujarat, led to the discovery of parthenocarpy as a unique characteristic in Diospyros plants in 2013.[1][2]

Background and Academic Training[edit | edit source]

Dr. Ishan Y. Pandya was born on January 26, 1990, in Dungarpur, Rajasthan, India. He pursued his education in biological sciences, earning a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Biotechnology from AMCOST College and B.R. Doshi School of Biosciences, both affiliated with Sardar Patel University. Later, he completed his doctoral studies in Biotechnology from the Institute of Science, Shri Jagdish Prasad Jhabarmal Tibrewala University, Rajasthan. Additionally, he has pursued management studies in Biotechnology from the USA.

Occupation[edit | edit source]

Dr. Pandya has had a career of more than ten years, during which he has held many roles in academia, research, and industry. He worked as an Ecologist at the Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) Foundation an autonomous organisation of Forest Department of Govt. of Gujarat, where he did research on the preservation of the environment and the storage of carbon in forest ecosystems. Afterwards, he served as a Lecturer of Human Physiology and Biotechnology in Aakash Institute, instructing students in preparation for the medical and life sciences competitive examinations including National eligibility cum entrance test. Many of his students have become medical doctors and researchers, both in India and internationally.

Academic Inquiry and Written Works Dr. Pandya is an interdisciplinary researcher and academician, he has written a substantial number of research papers, books, and patents (on biochips, smart climate sensors, antimicrobial phytochemicals etc.) in the multiple areas of natural and modern biosciences. He is interested in studying eco-physiological processes in natural ecosystem and its services, conducting research on floral communities, and exploring the potential of plant sources for producing bioactive chemicals. He is also interested deep machine learning and artificial intelligence and its application in biological sciences. He has made significant contributions to the scientific community's knowledge of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development through his substantial publications in national and international journals.[3]

Accolades and Acknowledgments[edit | edit source]

In 2022, Dr. Ishan is awarded by few prestigious awards including ‘Vigyan Ratna Puraskar’ 'Best Academician of the Year-2021', Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan Teaching Excellence Award on Teacher’s day, and ‘Best Indian Medical Science Award with Gold Medal’ in honour of placing highest students selection in NEET-UG for MBBS in India during pandemic COVID-19. For his research in Conservational biology, Foundation for Ecology and Environment felicitated him with the Biodiversity Conservation Award. He also received the Har Gobind Khorana Best Young Scientist Award in Biotechnology for the year 2020 by Bose Science Society-TNSRO, and the Best Scientist Award by IMRF.[4]

Membership in Professional Organizations[edit | edit source]

Dr. Pandya is also associated with scientific organisations, such as the Indian Virological Society (IVS), International Society of Environmental Botanists (ISEB-NBRI), Applied Zoologist Research Association, and Agricultural Technology Development Society. In addition, he fulfills the role of a reviewer for prestigious academic publications and actively engages in national and international conferences and seminars to disseminate his expertise and facilitate the exchange of knowledge with other scholars.
