Donald John Trump (born June 14, 1946) is an American businessman, television personality, and politician who served as the 45th president of the United States from January 20, 2017, to January 20, 2021. Prior to his presidency, he had a career in real estate and entertainment, becoming a prominent figure in American business.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Donald Trump was born and raised in Queens, New York City, the fourth of five children of Fred and Mary Anne Trump. His father was a successful real estate developer. Trump attended the New York Military Academy, where he excelled academically and in sports. He then attended Fordham University for two years before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the Wharton School in 1968.
Business career[edit | edit source]
Trump joined his father's real estate business, E. Trump & Son, in 1968, where he was involved in various development projects in Brooklyn and Queens. In 1971, he took control of the company and renamed it the Trump Organization. He expanded the company’s operations to include high-profile projects in Manhattan, including the construction of Trump Tower.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Trump became a well-known figure in the business world, but he also faced several financial setbacks, including bankruptcies related to his casinos and hotel businesses. Despite these challenges, he maintained a high public profile, leveraging his brand through various ventures, including the reality television show The Apprentice.
Political career[edit | edit source]
Trump announced his candidacy for president in June 2015 as a Republican, focusing on issues such as immigration reform, economic growth, and national security. His campaign was marked by controversial statements and a populist approach that resonated with many voters. He won the Republican nomination and defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election, securing the presidency with an Electoral College victory despite losing the popular vote.
Presidency (2017–2021)[edit | edit source]
During his presidency, Trump implemented significant policy changes, including tax cuts, deregulation, and a focus on "America First" in foreign policy. His administration faced numerous controversies, including two impeachment trials. The first impeachment, in December 2019, was related to charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress concerning his dealings with Ukraine. He was acquitted by the Senate in early 2020. The second impeachment occurred in January 2021 after the January 6 Capitol riot, where he was charged with incitement of insurrection; he was again acquitted.
Trump’s presidency was also marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to significant public health and economic challenges. His response to the pandemic received both support and criticism.
Post-presidency[edit | edit source]
After leaving office, Trump continued to be an influential figure within the Republican Party and announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election. His post-presidency period has been characterized by ongoing legal issues, including investigations into his business practices and his role in the events surrounding the Capitol riot.
Personal life[edit | edit source]
Trump has been married three times. His first marriage was to Ivana Trump, with whom he had three children: Donald Jr., Ivanka, and Eric. He then married Marla Maples, with whom he has one daughter, Tiffany. In 2005, he married Melania Trump, and they have one son, Barron.
Trump is known for his distinctive speaking style, use of social media, and a highly publicized lifestyle. He is a frequent subject of media coverage and has authored several books on business and success.
