A photographer (from the Greek words for "drawing" and "writing," which combined imply "drawing with light") is a person who creates photos.

Photographers that specialise in weddings and graduations are often employed by newspapers and other media organisations. They may also be hired to cover specific events, such as a wedding or graduation, or to create illustrations for advertisements. Others, such as fine art photographers, work as independent contractors, first creating an image and then licencing or producing printed copies of it for sale or public exhibition. Photography is a component of the job for certain people who operate in different fields such as crime scene photographers, real estate brokers, journalists, and scientists, among others. Photographers who work in the motion picture industry rather than still photography are referred to as cinematographers, videographers, or camera operators, depending on the business environment in which they work.
