New York (Template:IPAc-en) is a state located in the Northeastern United States. It is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, Connecticut to the east, Vermont to the northeast, and Massachusetts to the east. To the west, it shares a border with Canada. With a population of over 19 million, it is the fourth most populous state in the country.

New York was originally inhabited by Indigenous peoples of the Americas, such as the Iroquois and Algonquian tribes. The area was first explored by Europeans in 1524 by Giovanni da Verrazzano, and in 1609, the Dutch established a settlement called New Amsterdam on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. The English seized control of the region in 1664 and renamed it New York, after the Duke of York.
The state played a central role in the American Revolution and was one of the original 13 colonies that declared independence from Britain. New York also served as the first capital of the United States under the Articles of Confederation from 1789 to 1790.

New York covers 141,297 square kilometers (54,556 square miles) and is known for its diverse geography, including mountains, forests, and coastal areas. The Appalachian Mountains extend across the southern and western regions, while the Adirondack Mountains are located in the northern part of the state. The state is home to the Hudson River, which flows from the north to the south, dividing much of the state.

New York has one of the largest economies in the United States and is a global hub for finance, media, and technology. The city of New York City is considered the financial capital of the world, with the New York Stock Exchange located on Wall Street.
