== History == New York was originally inhabited by [[Indigenous peoples of the Americas]], such as the [[Iroquois]] and [[Algonquian]] tribes. The area was first explored by Europeans in 1524 by [[Giovanni da Verrazzano]], and in 1609, the [[Dutch]] established a settlement called [[New Amsterdam]] on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. The English seized control of the region in 1664 and renamed it New York, after the Duke of York. The state played a central role in the [[American Revolution]] and was one of the original 13 colonies that declared independence from Britain. New York also served as the first capital of the United States under the [[Articles of Confederation]] from 1789 to 1790.
